Moving or travelling with your pet can be an exciting experience, especially when it’s something new. But before you can actually head off, there are some preparations that need to be taken care of. One of these is a vet health certificate.

Many airlines, cities, and countries require it to ensure that the animals entering do not carry contagious or highly infectious diseases. In this blog, we’re going to talk all about a vet health certificate, from what it is to the benefits, and how to get one.

What Is a Veterinary Health Certificate?

A vet health certificate essentially certifies that your pet is fit for travel, and is required when transporting them from one place to another. It’s an important part of responsible pet travel. Without this crucial document, your pet won’t be able to enter or leave the country.

In addition to travel, a vet health certificate may also be required when availing essential services such as boarding and registering your pet with the Dubai Municipality.

Why Is a Vet Health Certificate Needed?

The certificate is required due to several important reasons relating to health, travel safety, and compliance.

Confirms Your Pet's Health

The primary purpose is to confirm that your pet is healthy and free from contagious diseases. This ensures that they are fit for travel, reducing the risk of health problems during transport.

Prevents the Spread of Disease

Vet health certificates help monitor pet health and reduce the risk of infectious disease by preventing travel for those who have them.

Complies with Local Regulations

This certificate is often required to show that the pet meets the health and medical requirements for the country. Without it, pets are denied entry or placed in quarantine.

What Information Is Included?

A veterinary health certificate includes pet identification, the owner’s details, proof of vaccinations, health and treatment details, an official endorsement, and any special requirements.

Pet Identification

The certificate contains basic details about your pet, including:

  • Your pet’s name

  • Species

  • Breed

  • Age or date of birth

  • Gender

  • Color and features

  • Microchip number

Owner’s Details

This also includes information about the owner.

  • Owner’s name

  • Address

  • Contact details

Proof of Vaccinations

Vaccination history is one of the most important sections of the health certificate. Pet vaccines must be administered at least 21 days before travel. It should include:

  • Vaccine name

  • Manufacturer

  • Batch number

  • Vaccination date

  • Expiration date

Health and Treatment Details

Before issuing the certificate, the vet must perform a clinical examination. He/she will then confirm:

  • Your pet’s fitness to travel

  • Details of the internal and external parasite treatment

  • Other significant information

Special Requirements

In some cases, especially when travelling from a high-risk country, the certificate must include a rabies antibody titer test. This requires at least 0.5 IU/mL.

Transport Details and Endorsement

Other important details will be included, such as:

  • Means of transport

  • Exporter and importer details

  • Country of export and import

  • Official stamp and signature from the vet

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if the vet health certificate expires?

When the document expires, it becomes invalid. Your pet will not be allowed to board, and they may be placed in quarantine or sent back to the country of origin. You’ll need to restart the entire process.

Do pets need this document for domestic travel?

Yes, a vet health certificate is still required even when travelling across the country. Like with international travel, this is meant to safeguard the pet and the community.

Can a pet be denied travel even with a health certificate?

Yes, pets can be denied entry with a missing import permit, invalid vaccinations, age restrictions, and banned breeds.
